Opportunities From: Delaware State Parks

We have several ongoing volunteer opportunities at the park but, sometimes, we get special projects that just require a few hours, or a day.   This would typically involve helping to clean the inside or outside of one of our historical houses, do some weeding in a specific area such as outside one of our historical homes, or other needs that come out.  If you indicate your interest here, we will reach out to you telling you have a project, to see if you are interested and/or available.

We could also use volunteers for some general painting and carpentry.

The Forest Restoration Team works year-round to remove a variety of invasive plants from the Judge Morris Estate site at White Clay Creek State Park. The work ranges from easy hand-pulling of small plants to removal of large shrubs and trees, to cutting and piling plant debris.  This volunteer group has been working at this site in White Clay Creek State Park for nine years to restore the forest's biodiversity and is making remarkable progress. 

There are periodic opportunities to install native species where invasive plants have been removed. This is a great way to learn more about invasive plants and the ecology of the park while helping out with a friendly group of like-minded individuals. This volunteer effort has won awards from the State of Delaware for dedication to the park and has received numerous grants to support the ongoing efforts. New volunteers are always needed and very welcome!   

When: Every Thursday at 9am to 11am. 

Who: Suitable for adult volunteers and for families with children 16 and over with parent consent form and parent or guardian supervision. Suitable for groups and corporate teams.

Wear: long pants, closed toed shoes and layered clothing that can get dirty and is suitable for the weather.

Bring: work gloves if you have them and a personal water bottle. Other tools will be provided.

Help us ring in the new year early at Zoo Year's Eve! This family friendly event will feature a cider toast and a ball drop at 12:00pm. Volunteers are needed to assist with supervising our crafting tables and pouring cider for zoo guests.

Volunteers should plan to be on-site at the zoo between 9:30 am and 2:30pm. This opportunity is outside, so please dress for a variety of temperatures.

Note: A background check is required for all event volunteers 18+. This is provided by Delaware State Parks at no cost to the volunteers 

"De-vine Intervention" is a program to remove invasive non-native vines and other plants to help the native trees throughout White Clay Creek State Park. Non-native invasive vines such as Oriental bittersweet will wrap tightly and overtop trees, eventually killing them. 

Non-native plants that we are removing include Arum Honeysuckle, Autumn Olive, Wineberry and multiflora rose.

Our team will help you identify these different plants and learn how to remove them safely.

We have removed so much of the under story that we are starting to see regrowth of some of the native American Holly, White Oak, Sassafras and other plants. The additional sunlight is also encouraging a regrowth of some non-natives so we regularly return to those areas to remove them.

When: Every Wednesday at 9:00 am until 11:00am. Meet at the far end of the parking lot at Carpenter Park.880 New London Road, Newark DE.

Who: Suitable for individuals and for families with children 14 and over. Parent consent form required for children under 18. Parent or guardian supervision required for children under 16. This opportunity is also suitable for teams up to ten people.

Save the trees from strangling vines in Brandywine Park!

Invasive plants like English ivy wrap tightly around trees, making them more susceptible to breaking branches, serious diseases, and eventually death. Removing these vines helps to control the spread of invasive plants throughout the park and in surrounding neighborhoods.

This fall and winter, the Brandywine Zoo is hosting 6 fang-tastic trivia nights! Ranging from the creepy and crawly to the birds and bees, these trivia nights are sure to be a "hoot".

We're looking for a volunteer who can serve alcoholic drinks at each trivia night. While you won't be answering the trivia, you'll still get to test your knowledge of the animal kingdom while pouring drinks, serving snacks, and ensuring guests enjoy their time with us.

Trivia Nights and Themes:

Volunteers must be 21+, complete a background check, and have proof of a valid, completed Responsible Server Training certification within the last 4 years. Training can be obtained online at either of the approved trainings linked here: https://date.delaware.gov/ATE/server-training.shtml. Financial support for the training may be available - please directly reach out to the Manager of Volunteers.

We need volunteers to help us battle encroaching invasive plants in Wells Field.  These aggressive plants steal nutrients from the soil that our native plants depend on to thrive.  Our wildlife and insects will not eat the invasive plants.  The invasive plants are harmful to our ecosystem and will create a monoculture if not removed/cut.  These invasive plants include multiflora rose, wineberry, and Japanese honeysuckle to name a few.

Starting in May, this opportunity will be every 2nd and 4th Sunday starting at 1:30 p.m. for two hours.  The opportunity lasts until February 22nd and starts again in spring 2025.

No experience is necessary! You only have to care about our forests, fields and wildlife.  Other experienced volunteers will be there to teach you how to identify the plants for removal and how to effectively remove them.

You will need to wear long-sleeved shirt, long pants and closed-in shoes. Please bring a bottle of water if you think you will need to hydrate.  Work gloves and tools will be provided.

Fortunately, public consciousness about the harms of invasive plants — plants not native to the region that grow aggressively, compete with native plants for resources, and displace native plants — continues to rise. Volunteers help to meet this challenge and thus make a significant difference in Killens Pond State Park’s quest to manage invasive plants. We are eager to work with like-minded people who are passionate or want to learn more about this issue. So please join us on the 3rd Saturday of each month, from 10 AM to 12 PM for a rewarding morning of volunteer work removing invasive plants!

In honor of the Delaware State Parks' 75th Anniversary, we’re launching a four-part volunteer series throughout 2026 celebrating service, stewardship, and community - and it all begins on MLK Day.

When: January 19th, 2026 (11am- 2pm)
Where: Lums Pond State Park, Mile Loop Trail
What: Trail trimming and Invasive Plant Removal

Join us for a Day of Service as we care for one of the park’s most popular trails! Volunteers will help trim back overgrowth and remove invasive plants along the Mile Loop Trail, improving access while protecting native ecosystems. Although it may seem counterintuitive to trim plants in the winter, often time invasive plant species are easier to identify because they stay green when native species turn brown.

**Tools such as trash grabbers, loppers, and cutters will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own!

This event marks Part 1 of our 2026 stewardship series, with additional volunteer opportunities coming later in the year. Whether you join us for one event or all four, your efforts will help shape the next 75 years of the park.

Brandywine Park's trees are under a great threat by the invasive plant English Ivy.  This invasive plant can literally strangle a tree.  It can kill trees by covering their trunks and branches, blocking sunlight, adding weight, and spreading rapidly through roots and bird-dispersed seeds, disrupting forest ecosystems and increasing erosion. It forms dense mats on the ground and climbs high into canopies, forming monocultures that displace vital food and habitat for wildlife.

We need volunteers to spend two hours with our team, using provided loppers and pruners, to cut these vines on trees in our wooded area.  Your assistance on this day will help us free the affected trees from these damaging vines.  Please join us!

Parking for this event will be across the street from the Brandywine Zoo.  Meeting place is the Josephine Fountain.  

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.

The Brandywine Zoo Conservation Science and Learning Department is seeking friendly, dependable, and enthusiastic volunteers for our Docent Program. As a Docent, you’ll guide guests through the wonderful world of wildlife, answer questions about animals and their behavior, and be a part of creating or sustaining the lifelong love of animals in our guests. You’ll be a member of a critical team that assists the Brandywine Zoo staff in making sure our guests leave with a sense of awe and are inspired to conserve wildlife!

Schedule: Minimum commitment of 24 shifts per year. You will choose two recurring shifts each month that you would like to come out for interpretation. Shifts are scheduled in the AM (10am-1pm) or PM (1pm-4pm) and will occur on a consistent day of the 1st and 3rd weeks or the 2nd and 4th weeks of each month. For example, a docent may be scheduled to work the AM shift on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month.  Docents are also required to attend monthly meetings on the first Saturday of each month. Additional coordination will be done by the Manager of Volunteers and Curator of Conservation Science and Learning at the Brandywine Zoo.

Training Dates: Attendance at all training days is mandatory, as each day covers different information.

Unfortunately, it is against our policy to allow volunteers to work with our animals at this time. This is both for the safety of our volunteers and our animals.

All Brandywine Zoo docent volunteers are required to undergo and successfully complete a background check performed by the Division of Parks and Recreation.

Volunteers are sought to provide a safe and secure experience at Cape Henlopen State Park.

Park Watch volunteers deal with minor infractions of park rules and regulations, report potential safety and security concerns, and assist the park staff in operation of the park.  Volunteers are given basic training in  public relations, and visitor services. Park Watch volunteers are citizens who typically spend a significant amount of time in the park and simply wear a Park Watch shirt or vest when they come to the park to recreate themselves. 

Volunteer scheduling is very flexible; Park Watch volunteers can be found in the park from sun-up to sun-down and on any of the various trails associated with Cape Henlopen including Wolfe Neck and the Junction and Breakwater Trail. This is a year-round volunteer opportunity.

Main duties are as follows:

Volunteers will be trained in all duties beforehand and are required to attend a Park Watch Volunteer Orientation prior to starting.

Become a valued member of the Killens Pond State Park team by volunteering at our Nature Center! Volunteers help enhance the visitor experience by assisting with programs and activities, as well as providing a welcoming presence inside the Nature Center.

As a Nature Center Assistant Volunteer, you’ll greet visitors, answer questions about the park and its natural features, and help guide guests to have a fun, educational, and memorable visit. You may also assist with a variety of nature-based programs and activities, supporting staff and helping visitors connect with the great outdoors.

The Friends of Brandywine Creek State Park are a non-profit 501(c)(3) group that sponsors Park events and helps with scholarships and other park amenities. Are you passionate about maintaining safe, accessible trails for all to use? Come join Brandywine Creek State Park's Adopt-A-Trail program! 

There are over 16 miles of trails at Brandywine Creek, and we can use your help cutting back encroaching vegetation and keeping them clear of debris. During the growing season, primarily March-October, Adopt-A-Trail volunteers are responsible for walking their assigned section of trail and assisting with maintenance and upkeep.

As an Adopt-A-Trail volunteer, you will:

Adopters visit their assigned section of trail a minimum of once a month between March and October. Training on trimming and basic trail maintenance will be provided before you begin the program. Tools will also be provided. Training is required to participate in the program.

Friends of Wilmington Parks is responsible for the care of the Native Habitat Restoration, whose project site is near the old boathouse at the southwest end of the Swinging Footbridge at Brandywine Park.

Under the purview of the FOWP Programming Committee, the NHR standing committee, led by Phillip Liu, and their volunteers work tirelessly to eradicate invasive plants and steward native flora that attract native fauna to help restore a diverse local ecosystem. In 2023, former FOWP Stewards and longtime project team leaders David Jezyk and Denis O’Sullivan accepted a DNREC Volunteer of the Year Award for Community Action Group on behalf of the team.

Lums Pond State Park welcomes Girl Scouts who are pursuing a Gold Award and Boy Scouts who are pursuing the Eagle Rank!

Delaware State Parks appreciates the long history of Scouts’ service and is familiar with the processes to achieve such Scout honors. The park may identify potential service projects that would satisfy the requirements of a Girl Scout Gold Award or an Eagle Scout Service Project. Scouts are also welcome to submit proposals for service projects to the park.

Requirements:

Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts who enjoy visiting Lums Pond State Park, are passionate about taking care of natural spaces and supporting local ecosystems, and/or are passionate about supporting Delaware State Parks’ mission are excellent candidates to complete a service project at the park for a Girl Scout Gold Award or the Boy Scout Eagle Rank!

Who: suitable for individuals or small teams (2 people) who have regular availability. You can be the sole monitor of your assigned boxes, or be assigned a partner and alternate visits.  Substitutes are available when you give notice that you will be away.

Are you an avid rock climber? Do you have a passion for history? Come out to Fort Delaware and assist park staff in the removal of invasive plants and other vegetation growing along the front and back of historic Fort Delaware! It's not every day you get to scale a 170-year-old fort, so jump on the opportunity now!

Fort Delaware State Park is looking for experienced rock climbers or bouldering enthusiasts who would be willing to scale down the side of the fort and remove invasive vines. These vines can become damaging to the structure of the historic fort, and their removal will greatly benefit the longevity of this national treasure!

To access the vines, there is an overhang that climbers must traverse, making this a suggested Class 5 hard to difficult climb. It is suggested that only experienced rock climbers attempt the project. Climbers must bring their own equipment, as well.

The Storybook Trail is adjacent to Alapocas Run State Park’s popular and cherished Can-Do Playground. It features a new children’s story every month, and its garden beds are home to a plethora of native plants and serve a plurality of pollinators.

Members of the Storybook Trail Stewardship Team may also be invited to work on special group projects for the site.

Visitors who enjoy exploring the Storybook Trail and Can-Do Playground with their favorite young people, are passionate about the importance of these special spaces, and/or are interested in the pollination cycle and stewardship of the local ecosystem are excellent candidates to volunteer with the Storybook Trail Stewardship Team!

The Brandywine Zoo is looking for volunteer groups (ages 14+) with 15 or less participants to help us wrangle our jungle of weeds or schedule a service project for their teams, classes, and more!

Alapocas Run State Park welcomes volunteers who would like to help care for its rock-climbing wall as well as the landing zone and access trail for it!

The famous Blue Granite Cliffs in Alapocas Run State Park are the home of the only natural rock-climbing wall in Delaware and help to make the park one of the most unique places in the state to visit. The park offers top-rope climbing programs. Visitors may acquire a free permit from the Blue Ball Barn to climb on their own.

Primary duties:

* — Requires extensive climbing experience, knowledge of safe tool use while climbing, prior authorization from park staff, and member of park staff to be present.

Needs can be significant after weather events.

Members of the Climbing Conservation Crew may also be invited to work on special group projects for the site.

Visitors who enjoy rock-climbing and moderate-to-difficult trails and/or are passionate about the preservation of access to such opportunities are excellent candidates to volunteer with the Climbing Conservation Crew!

Bellevue State Park welcomes volunteers who would like to help care for its reimagined Pollinator Garden!

The Pollinator Garden lies in what used to be known as the Butterfly Garden near the main road between the concert bandshell and the tennis courts on the way to Bellevue Hall.

Volunteers who RESPOND to Pollinator Garden Gang may also be invited to work on special projects for the site, such as plantings or refurbishments.

Our trail volunteers are our eyes and ears on the trails. We have 160 miles of trails throughout the 17 state parks in Delaware and we are always adding new ones.  With so many miles of trails to maintain, we rely heavily on our Adopt-A-Trail volunteers to perform basic maintenance tasks and report any issues that require staff attention.  We cannot do this without YOU! 

Alapocas Run State Park is home to a stretch of the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail, a trail system in Alapocas Woods, and other social paths.

We couldn't do it without you!

When: during the growing season, from March thru November

The DMN Program is a remarkable opportunity for professionals as well as enthusiasts to become a certified Delaware Master Naturalist.

The Delaware Master Naturalist Program trains citizens as ambassadors and stewards of Delaware’s natural resources and ecosystems through science-based education and volunteer opportunities.

It requires registrants to complete 40 hours of service time with a Local Organizing Partner (LOP) to achieve certification as well as 40 hours annually afterward to maintain it.

Fort Delaware State Park welcomes first-year candidates as well as continuing-service participants. Service projects can be as varied as the volunteer’s interests that align with park priorities. The park may identify service projects that would satisfy the requirements of the certification. DMN candidates and continuing-service volunteers are also welcome to submit proposals for service projects to the park.

Description

Delaware Seashore State Park, boasting six miles of ocean and 20 miles of bay shoreline, serves as an important part of the southern Delaware coastline. The dynamic Indian River Inlet connects the Indian River and Rehoboth Bays with the Atlantic Ocean and is the epicenter of the park’s many activities. A beach lies on either side of the inlet, welcoming anglers and beachgoers who stay for the day or overnight at the park’s waterfront campground and cottages. The Indian River Life-Saving Station, built in 1876 for use by the United States Lifesaving Service to respond to shipwrecks, now pays homage to its maritime heritage while doubling as a coastal event space and educational center. The barrier beach and inland bays provide the perfect salt marsh habitat and nesting grounds for birds and terrapins. More than seven miles of trails welcome hikers, bikers, and birders.

Campground hosts assist campers and park staff within Delaware Seashore’s campground by greeting campers, assisting with check-in/check-out, distributing information and answering questions about the Park. Hosts will also assist with general maintenance, and other campground services as needed.

Centrally located in Delaware, Killens Pond State Park showcases a lovely, secluded pond surrounded by a mixed hardwood forest, ideal for boating, fishing, or hiking with miles of trails and acres of fields. The Park also has a Water Park that includes spiraling slides and interactive water features with a tot lot for younger children.
Hosts work together at this park to help maintain the campground, 11 cabins, one bathhouse, and answering visitors’ questions and enriching guest experiences.

Host Benefits

You will be required to pass a background check to become a Host. You will not be asked to complete a background check until you are referred to the park for a second interview and the park extends an offer to become a Host.

Basic computer proficiency and access to a personal computer are required to complete the application and onboarding process. Hosts will need to be able to navigate online forms, send and receive email, and access training materials electronically.

Auburn Valley State Park has a need for volunteers willing to be contacted when there are one or even day projects to do at the park.  This would include cleaning out a building or doing some cleaning inside a building, planting trees and other projects that come up.  As projects come up, I would email you and ask if you are interested and available to assist, along with the details of the project. 

You would be a wonderful resource for us to have.

Brandywine Creek State Park welcomes work, school, and other groups interested in scheduling a service project for their teams, classes, and more!

A group service project is a great way to provide your organization with an opportunity:

The types of service projects available to groups are based on seasonal needs at Brandywine Creek State Park, progress of the parks’ improvement projects, and other factors. Service projects for school groups may prioritize educational value and are intended to be age-appropriate.

Types of seasonal service projects available to groups include:

Coordinators for group service projects may RESPOND AS TEAM to this opportunity and ask about scheduling a date and time that is compatible with the group’s schedule. Coordinators are also welcome to RESPOND AS TEAM to a scheduled service project if there are enough available shifts.

Note: The project site’s address may differ from the park’s address and will be provided during scheduling of a group service project.

Are you a scout completing a project for your awards and ranks or a scout leader searching for service projects for your troop? Brandywine Creek State Park welcomes individual scouts and scouting troops for project opportunities and learning experiences!

We appreciate the long history of Scouts’ service with Delaware State Parks and are familiar with the processes to achieve such Scout honors. The park can identify potential service opportunities for entire troops or projects that would satisfy the requirements of a Girl Scout Award or an Eagle Scout Service Project. Scouts are also welcome to submit proposals for service projects to the park.

Requirements:

Scouts and scouting troops who enjoy visiting Brandywine Creek State Park, are passionate about taking care of natural spaces and supporting local ecosystems, and/or are passionate about supporting Delaware State Parks are excellent candidates to complete a service project at the park!
