Opportunities From: Delaware State Parks

We have several ongoing volunteer opportunities at the park but, sometimes, we get special projects that just require a few hours, or a day.   This would typically involve helping to clean the inside or outside of one of our historical houses, do some weeding in a specific area such as outside one of our historical homes, or other needs that come out.  If you indicate your interest here, we will reach out to you telling you have a project, to see if you are interested and/or available.

We could also use volunteers for some general painting and carpentry.

The Forest Restoration Team works year-round to remove a variety of invasive plants near the University of Delaware and downtown Newark, within White Clay Creek State Park. The work ranges from easy hand-pulling of small plants to removal of large shrubs and trees, to cutting and piling plant debris.  This volunteer group will build on the work at the JME section of the park and make the volunteer opportunity more accessible to students.  We will restore the forest's biodiversity and repeat the remarkable progress we have seen elsewhere. 

There may be periodic opportunities to install native species where invasive plants have been removed. This is a great way to learn more about invasive plants and the ecology of the park while helping out with a friendly group of like-minded individuals. This volunteer effort has won awards from the State of Delaware for dedication to the park and has received numerous grants to support the ongoing efforts. New volunteers are always needed and very welcome!

Help us conserve, preserve and more!

Join the Conservation Crew as we tackle a park project! Volunteers might be removing invasive plant species, collecting litter, pulling weeds, or preparing the park for a special event. Most projects will include the use of hand tools such as pruners or litter grabbers.

Prepare: Dress for the weather, bring a water bottle to stay hydrated and sunscreen and bug spray. Tools and gloves are available to share.

 Meeting location may vary based on projects; registered volunteers will be notified at least the day before of exact meeting location.

"De-vine Intervention" occurs as we remove invasive non-native vines to help the native trees throughout White Clay Creek State Park. Non-native invasive vines such as Oriental bittersweet will wrap tightly and overtop trees, eventually killing them. You'll learn to identify non-native vines and how to properly cut them to protect trees.

Join the Friends of Killens Pond State Park in this beautification activity! Volunteers help to keep Killens Pond beautiful by engaging in trail trimming/maintenance activities, and other park projects as needed. Tools are available to share; please bring gloves if you have them.

Join Lums Pond State Park staff and Friends of Lums Pond members for a Lums Pond Trail Trimming Day!

Help cut back vegetation and remove obstacles on a high-priority trail or trail segment and improve accessibility for hikers, runners, and bike riders. Experience, tools, and gloves are welcome, but they are not required. If you’re interested, we’d love to see you there!

Lums Pond State Park is home to over 17 miles of multiuse trail comprised primarily of the Little Jersey Trail and the Swamp Forest Trail. From March through November—primarily April through October—vegetation encroaches considerably on those trails, especially the Swamp Forest Trail and Mile Loop Trail.

Lums Pond Trail Trimming Days are typically scheduled for the second Saturday of each month throughout the season to support park maintenance staff and other volunteers in the efforts maintain accessibility.

Pollinator Garden volunteers help to reverse the decline in pollinator populations while beautifying the park! Native plants and their pollinators need your help to continue to thrive. Insects such as native bees are our most vital pollinators, and native pollinators love native plants.  You can apply what you learn to your home garden too! Join in to do light gardening, weeding, plant installation, and maintenance at our pollinator gardens!  There are two worksites which alternate - the Judge Morris Estate and the Nature Center. When: Saturdays during the growing season from 9am to 11am.  Who: Perfect for individuals or a small group (up to five). Wear: long pants, closed toed shoes and layered clothing that can get dirty and is suitable for the weather. A sun hat and sunscreen are recommended.  Bring: gardening gloves if you have them, a personal water bottle and hand tools if you have them. Otherwise, tools will be provided. Parking: You will be notified which site will be the worksite.  Parking will be at either the Judge Morris Estate area parking lot on Polly Drummond Road, or at the Nature Center off Hopkins Road (at 1475 Creek Rd).

Your time and efforts are greatly appreciated, allowing visitors to enjoy beautiful gardens.

We need volunteers to help us battle encroaching invasive plants in Wells Field.  These aggressive plants steal nutrients from the soil that our native plants depend on to thrive.  Our wildlife and insects will not eat the invasive plants.  The invasive plants are harmful to our ecosystem and will create a monoculture if not removed/cut.  These invasive plants include multiflora rose, wineberry, and Japanese honeysuckle to name a few.

Starting in May, this opportunity will be every 2nd and 4th Sunday starting at 1:30 p.m. for two hours.  The opportunity lasts until November 23rd and starts again in spring 2025.

No experience is necessary! You only have to care about our forests, fields and wildlife.  Other experienced volunteers will be there to teach you how to identify the plants for removal and how to effectively remove them.

You will need to wear long-sleeved shirt, long pants and closed-in shoes. Please bring a bottle of water if you think you will need to hydrate.  Work gloves and tools will be provided.

Join First State Heritage Park for a John Bell House Garden Day! As a Garden Day volunteer, you will help the park maintain its three vegetable and herb gardens while engaging in historical interpretation. This experience also includes the opportunity to dress in historical clothing provided by the park.

On each First State Heritage Park Garden Day, volunteers can:

Tools, including trowels, watering cans and gloves, will be provided by the park. Prior gardening experience is welcome, but not required.

First State Heritage Park has three gardens consisting of the colonial garden, the enslaved person’s garden, and the Indigenous garden. The colonial bed features herbs, lettuce, radishes and more which could all be found in a modest colonial family’s kitchen garden. The enslaved person’s garden displays the methods of gardening enslaved people used to grow crops, as well as the foods that helped them maintain connections to their African heritage, such as peppers and collard greens. The Eastern Woodlands and Indigenous garden exhibits the Three-Sisters method of planting with corn, beans, and squash.

First State Heritage Park Garden Days are typically planned for the third Saturday of each month, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., during the season to support park staff and other volunteers in the efforts to maintain these gardens.

Fortunately, public consciousness about the harms of invasive plants — plants not native to the region that grow aggressively, compete with native plants for resources, and displace native plants — continues to rise. Volunteers help to meet this challenge and thus make a significant difference in Killens Pond State Park’s quest to manage invasive plants. We are eager to work with like-minded people who are passionate or want to learn more about this issue. So please join us on the 3rd Saturday of each month, from 10 AM to 12 PM for a rewarding morning of volunteer work removing invasive plants!

Ahoy, campers! Help keep Delaware Seashore State Park beautiful by participating in our Pirate Litter Bingo adventure. This is a self-led volunteer activity open only to registered campers at Delaware Seashore State Park.

How it Works:
Pick up your bingo sheet and supplies between 9:30 AM and 3:30 PM from the Camp Store, then set sail around the park to find and collect litter. Complete a row (or more!) on your bingo card and help us protect our shores!

When you finish, return all supplies by 4:30 PM and log your volunteer hours here on Galaxy Digital.

We're having a good old fashioned Hootenanny at Brandywine Creek State Park, and we need your help to make it a hootin' good time!

The Brandywine Creek State Park Hootenanny is a harvest themed festival occurring on October 18th, between 4:00pm and 7:00pm. Volunteers are needed to help with event set-up, running craft stations, including scarecrow stuffing and pumpkin painting, and breaking down the event.

Additionally, we are looking for a volunteer to assist with face painting a small selection of pre-planned designs. Please reach out directly or leave a comment if interested in face painting.

Join us at the Brandywine Zoo for a bat-astic good time at Boo at the Zoo! We're looking for volunteers ready to haunt our event and engage our guests! This family friendly event is our annual "trick-or-treating" event at the zoo, with local vendors, Halloween-themed educational opportunities, and of course, our spook-tacular animals!

As a Boo at the Zoo event volunteer, volunteers can expect to:

Join the Brandywine Zoo for our seasonal litter cleanups! At each Litter Cleanup, volunteers and zoo staff will collect and properly dispose of trash around the zoo and throughout Brandywine Park.

We will be offering litter cleanups on the following dates:

Litter has several negative impacts on the environment, including contributing to land and water toxicity, harming wildlife, and taking decades or centuries to break down, adding long-lasting microplastics to our natural environment. By joining us in cleaning up litter, you'll not only make your Delaware State Parks prettier, but also reduce these negative impacts!

Tools and gloves are welcome, but not required! We will provide all tools, gloves and trash bags. Please wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing. You're welcome to bring sunscreen and a reusable bottle of water.

Do you like haunted trails or cryptid encounters? Join us at Brandywine Creek State Park for the Legend of the Brandywine Werewolf! Werewolf sightings have been recorded along the Brandywine Creek dating back to 1962 and earlier. We need your help on this guided hike as we attempt to catch our own werewolves!

We're looking for passionate volunteers who aren't afraid of the things that go bump in the night to help us create a spooky time for our guests. Volunteers will assist with guest check-in or be stationed along our trail to help startle program participants. 

There will be two programs on November 8th. The first will be 6:30pm-7:30pm, and the second will be 8:30pm-9:30pm. Volunteers should plan to be on-site between 6:00pm and 10:00pm.

Volunteers are sought to provide a safe and secure experience at Cape Henlopen State Park.

Park Watch volunteers deal with minor infractions of park rules and regulations, report potential safety and security concerns, and assist the park staff in operation of the park.  Volunteers are given basic training in  public relations, and visitor services. Park Watch volunteers are citizens who typically spend a significant amount of time in the park and simply wear a Park Watch shirt or vest when they come to the park to recreate themselves. 

Volunteer scheduling is very flexible; Park Watch volunteers can be found in the park from sun-up to sun-down and on any of the various trails associated with Cape Henlopen including Wolfe Neck and the Junction and Breakwater Trail. This is a year-round volunteer opportunity.

Main duties are as follows:

Volunteers will be trained in all duties beforehand and are required to attend a Park Watch Volunteer Orientation prior to starting.

Become a valued member of the Killens Pond State Park team by volunteering at our Nature Center! Volunteers help enhance the visitor experience by assisting with programs and activities, as well as providing a welcoming presence inside the Nature Center.

As a Nature Center Assistant Volunteer, you’ll greet visitors, answer questions about the park and its natural features, and help guide guests to have a fun, educational, and memorable visit. You may also assist with a variety of nature-based programs and activities, supporting staff and helping visitors connect with the great outdoors.

The DMN Program is a remarkable opportunity for professionals as well as enthusiasts to become a certified Delaware Master Naturalist.

The Delaware Master Naturalist Program trains citizens as ambassadors and stewards of Delaware’s natural resources and ecosystems through science-based education and volunteer opportunities.

It requires registrants to complete 40 hours of service time with a Local Organizing Partner (LOP) to achieve certification as well as 40 hours annually afterward to maintain it.

Lums Pond State Park welcomes first-year candidates as well as continuing-service participants. Service projects can be as varied as the volunteer’s interests that align with park priorities. The park may identify service projects that would satisfy the requirements of the certification. DMN candidates and continuing-service volunteers are also welcome to submit proposals for service projects to the park.

Note: This opportunity is only for registrants in the Delaware Master Naturalist Program—a certification offered in partnership by the University of Delaware Cooperative Extension and Delaware Nature Society—or certified Delaware Master Naturalists.

The Delaware Master Naturalist Program is a remarkable opportunity for professionals as well as enthusiasts to become a certified Master Naturalist. It requires registrants to complete 40 hours of service time with a Local Organizing Partner (LOP) like Delaware State Parks to achieve certification as well as 40 hours annually afterward to maintain it.

Bellevue State Park welcomes first-year candidates as well as continuing-service participants. Service projects can be as varied as the volunteer’s interests that align with park priorities. The park may identify potential service projects that would satisfy the requirements of the certification. Master Naturalist candidates and continuing-service volunteers are also welcome to submit proposals for service projects to the park.

Are you passionate about maintaining safe, accessible trails for all to use? Come join Brandywine Creek State Park's Adopt-A-Trail program! 

There are over 16 miles of trails at Brandywine Creek, and we can use your help cutting back encroaching vegetation and keeping them clear of debris. During the growing season, primarily March-October, Adopt-A-Trail volunteers are responsible for walking their assigned section of trail and assisting with maintenance and upkeep.

As an Adopt-A-Trail volunteer, you will:

Adopters visit their assigned section of trail a minimum of once a month between March and October. Training on trimming and basic trail maintenance will be provided before you begin the program. Tools will also be provided. Training is required to participate in the program.

Friends of Wilmington Parks is responsible for the care of the Native Habitat Restoration, whose project site is near the old boathouse at the southwest end of the Swinging Footbridge at Brandywine Park.

Under the purview of the FOWP Programming Committee, the NHR standing committee, led by Phillip Liu, and their volunteers work tirelessly to eradicate invasive plants and steward native flora that attract native fauna to help restore a diverse local ecosystem. In 2023, former FOWP Stewards and longtime project team leaders David Jezyk and Denis O’Sullivan accepted a DNREC Volunteer of the Year Award for Community Action Group on behalf of the team.

Lums Pond State Park welcomes Girl Scouts who are pursuing a Gold Award and Boy Scouts who are pursuing the Eagle Rank!

Delaware State Parks appreciates the long history of Scouts’ service and is familiar with the processes to achieve such Scout honors. The park may identify potential service projects that would satisfy the requirements of a Girl Scout Gold Award or an Eagle Scout Service Project. Scouts are also welcome to submit proposals for service projects to the park.

Requirements:

Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts who enjoy visiting Lums Pond State Park, are passionate about taking care of natural spaces and supporting local ecosystems, and/or are passionate about supporting Delaware State Parks’ mission are excellent candidates to complete a service project at the park for a Girl Scout Gold Award or the Boy Scout Eagle Rank!

With almost 40 miles of trails, we couldn't do it without you!

Who: suitable for individuals and for small teams up to 5 people.

Wear: long pants, closed toed shoes and layered clothing that can get dirty and is suitable for the weather.

Bring: your work gloves, loppers and hand pruners   

Parking: Assigned volunteers park in a lot near their trail location. If you do not have a state park parking pass, you can receive a temporary parking pass for use during your volunteer visits only.

Bluebird Nestbox Monitors keep an eagle eye on their assigned bluebird boxes, reporting on nesting activity details. On a weekly basis, bluebird nestbox monitors check assigned boxes. Cornell University's NestWatch program is used by all volunteers to enter observation information.

Who: suitable for individuals or small teams (2 people) who have regular availability. You can be the sole monitor of your assigned boxes, or be assigned a partner and alternate visits.  Substitutes are available when you give notice that you will be away.

Bring: a personal water bottle. Observation mirror will be provided.

Volunteer Trail Maintenance Crew or "VTMC" volunteers keep trails ready for hikers and bikers at White Clay Creek State Park. The VTMC does the essential seasonal maintenance with power mowers and power trimmers to maintain cleared trail edges.  This is a constant need during the growing season.  Your efforts will help keep trails open and welcoming for park visitors. With almost 40 miles of trails, we couldn't do it without volunteers!

When: during the growing season, from March thru November

Who: suitable for individuals who are willing to receive a background check at park expense and to complete training to use power equipment in the park. Suitable for individuals and for small teams up to 5 people.

Are you an avid rock climber? Do you have a passion for history? Come out to Fort Delaware and assist park staff in the removal of invasive plants and other vegetation growing along the front and back of historic Fort Delaware! It's not every day you get to scale a 170-year-old fort, so jump on the opportunity now!

Fort Delaware State Park is looking for experienced rock climbers or bouldering enthusiasts who would be willing to scale down the side of the fort and remove invasive vines. These vines can become damaging to the structure of the historic fort, and their removal will greatly benefit the longevity of this national treasure!

To access the vines, there is an overhang that climbers must traverse, making this a suggested Class 5 hard to difficult climb. It is suggested that only experienced rock climbers attempt the project. Climbers must bring their own equipment, as well.

When: Hunter volunteers generally meet on Wednesdays at 4:30. Some task are done on your own schedule while others occur on specific dates.

Who: Any individuals or small groups who hunt at the park and wish to volunteer.

When: Individual scouts and groups can sign up for opportunities on the volunteer calendar, or schedule custom volunteer events, or coordinate a meeting to discuss Eagle project opportunities.

Memorial Bench Volunteers build and install benches that serve as a meaningful memorial to loved ones.  Volunteers participate in work days doing woodworking tasks using hand tools and power sanders and installing benches along the trails in White Clay Creek State Park. Those wishing to learn are welcome!

When: Work days are scheduled on specific dates and times.

Who: Adult individuals or small groups who like to use hand tools and power sanders or want to learn. 

Wear: long pants, closed toed shoes and layered clothing that can get dirty and is suitable for the weather.

The Storybook Trail is adjacent to Alapocas Run State Park’s popular and cherished Can-Do Playground. It features a new children’s story every month, and its garden beds are home to a plethora of native plants and serve a plurality of pollinators.

The Brandywine Zoo is looking for volunteer groups (ages 14+) with 15 or less participants to help us wrangle our jungle of weeds or schedule a service project for their teams, classes, and more!

The famous Blue Granite Cliffs in Alapocas Run State Park are the home of the only natural rock-climbing wall in Delaware and help to make the park one of the most unique places in the state to visit. The park offers top-rope climbing programs. Visitors may acquire a free permit from the Blue Ball Barn to climb on their own.

Primary duties:

* — Requires extensive climbing experience, knowledge of safe tool use while climbing, prior authorization from park staff, and member of park staff to be present.

Delaware Seashore State Park, boasting six miles of ocean and 20 miles of bay shoreline, serves as an important part of the southern Delaware coastline. The dynamic Indian River Inlet connects the Indian River and Rehoboth Bays with the Atlantic Ocean and is the epicenter of the park’s many activities. A beach lies on either side of the inlet, welcoming anglers and beachgoers who stay for the day or overnight at the park’s waterfront campground and cottages. The Indian River Life-Saving Station, built in 1876 for use by the United States Lifesaving Service to respond to shipwrecks, now pays homage to its maritime heritage while doubling as a coastal event space and educational center. The barrier beach and inland bays provide the perfect salt marsh habitat and nesting grounds for birds and terrapins. More than seven miles of trails welcome hikers, bikers, and birders.

Campground hosts assist campers and park staff within Delaware Seashore’s campground by greeting campers, assisting with check-in/check-out, distributing information and answering questions about the Park. During Winter months, there is a greater emphasis on maintenance tasks including painting, cleaning and light carpentry work.

The Delaware State Parks Adopt-a-Trail Program was established to help individuals and groups become active environmental stewards of the various types of trails within Delaware State Parks.  Trail adopters regularly monitor our trails, performing basic maintenance tasks on the trail and reporting larger concerns or issues for staff to address.  Through monitoring efforts, our trail adopters help keep the trails clear and safe for all to enjoy.

Our trail volunteers are our eyes and ears on the trails. We have 160 miles of trails throughout the 17 state parks in Delaware and we are always adding new ones.  With so many miles of trails to maintain, we rely heavily on our Adopt-A-Trail volunteers to perform basic maintenance tasks and report any issues that require staff attention.  We cannot do this without YOU! 

Alapocas Run State Park is home to a stretch of the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail, a trail system in Alapocas Woods, and other social paths.

"Adopt-A-Hole" volunteers assist with the upkeep of Disc Golf Course holes at White Clay Creek State Park. We couldn't do it without you!

Delaware State Parks is a Local Organizing Partner (LOP) of the Delaware Master Naturalist (DMN) Program.

The DMN Program is a remarkable opportunity for professionals as well as enthusiasts to become a certified Delaware Master Naturalist.

The Delaware Master Naturalist Program trains citizens as ambassadors and stewards of Delaware’s natural resources and ecosystems through science-based education and volunteer opportunities.

It requires registrants to complete 40 hours of service time with a Local Organizing Partner (LOP) to achieve certification as well as 40 hours annually afterward to maintain it.

Fort Delaware State Park welcomes first-year candidates as well as continuing-service participants. Service projects can be as varied as the volunteer’s interests that align with park priorities. The park may identify service projects that would satisfy the requirements of the certification. DMN candidates and continuing-service volunteers are also welcome to submit proposals for service projects to the park.

Adopt-a-Trail Program

The Delaware State Parks Adopt-a-Trail Program was established to help individuals and groups become active environmental stewards of the various types of trails within Delaware State Parks.  Trail adopters regularly monitor our trails, performing basic maintenance tasks on the trail and reporting larger concerns or issues for staff to address.  Through monitoring efforts, our trail adopters help keep the trails clear and safe for all to enjoy.  Thank YOU for your interest in being a part of this program!

Task you would be completing:

·       Pick up trash

·       Remove natural debris

·       Trim Vegetation

·       Invasive plant removal (only after being trained by Park Staff)

·       Report areas of concern

Time Commitment:

The Adopt-A-Trail season spans from March – October, during the growing season. Trail volunteers commit to monitoring their trail a minimum of 6 times during this season. Trail volunteers can expect to spend 1 - 2 hours on their trails each visit, depending on the length of their trail and work level.

Reporting:

For each monitoring visit, trail volunteers submit a trail report documenting any work that they did on the trail and describing any additional work required by staff.

Once you sign up under this opportunity you will be emailed to set up a time to meet with the Volunteer Coord. to go over more details, sign service agreement and set up a training time.

First State Heritage Park welcomes volunteers to bring the history of the John Bell House to life as interpreters! You can help visitors really feel like they are walking into a house from the 18th Century.

Experience and knowledge are welcome, but not required. All you need is an eagerness to learn and a passion for local and regional history! We’d love to see you there!

The John Bell House at First State Heritage Park was built in the mid-1700s and offers a glimpse into the everyday life of Dover’s earliest days. Learn about marching Revolutionaries, Freedom Seekers, Suffragists, and more, and bring their stories to life!
